Ann Arbor BollyFit: Let’s Sweat It Out!

bollyfit

Ann Arbor BollyFit is using dance as an exercise to improve fitness. A little bit of traditional, folk, and modern Indian dance mixed with hip hop moves that are popular in India’s Bollywood are used here.

Anuja Rajendra said, “They’re giddy; they’re laughing. They’re also sweating, but that’s a side thing.” Rajendra is the founder and owner of BollyFit in Ann Arbor. She started BollyFit in 2007 after gaining pregnancy weight. She used the certification that she earned in Indian dance styles to teach classes at the Ann Arbor YMCA. Those classes gained popularity and earned wait-lists from gym goers who are eager to try it out.

During that time, Rajendra had started and sold a pottery business, she also worked in the corporate and tech start-up jobs. She also earned a business degree from the University of Michigan.

She said that it just feels natural to start a business doing what she really wants; and that is dancing.

She will be having BollyFit Instructor Certification in August and a Dance DVD is also underway.

When asked what was the thing that made her proud, she answered, “Performing on June 30 at Top of the Park Rackham stage with 34 students, ranging from 2 year olds in BollyFit Kids to four grandmothers. These amazing women inspire me immensely. Together, we had a blast preparing and during the performance.”

Her biggest aspiration is focusing on the present and taking one step at a time. BollyFit is aimed to bring out the best in everyone who participates.Rajendra said that this is exactly what she wants to be doing.

What you don’t know about her: “At 5 feet, I played on the U-M Women’s Rugby Team (club sport) while an undergrad engineering student at Michigan. And without knowing how to ice skate before, played on the club ice hockey team as an MBA student here.”

For Rajendra, it is important to surround yourself with aptitude, diligence, integrity and energy in business. She added that if you want to open your own business, you must be passionate about it.
