Ann Arbor firefighters prevented the spread of fire as they hosed down a chair before it consumed the house at 1214 Corby Crescent.

David Miller, the homeowner called 911 and reported that his basement was full of smoke before noon. He had been out of the house for about an hour late in the morning. He returned home with the sound of the smoke detector activating and the smell of smoke.

Firemen arrived and found that a chair was caught on fire in the basement. They removed the chair from the house and put out the fire in the sidewalk.

The house was not damaged in anyway. According to Lt. ScottĀ  Robertson the Millers were lucky that the fire did not spread beyond the chair. He said that the chair could have burst into flames and spread even further because of the pressure of the smoke and heat.

The cause of fire is not known according to Robertson, Miller said that he will inspect his basement fireplace and electric system to prevent such incidents from happening.
