“Introduction to Meditation” with Dennis Churnin, M.D.

This three week class for beginners and intermediate students will focus on learning about and practicing meditation and breathing exercises (pranayama). We will study how to focus the mind using chakras (energy centers in the body), mantras (sounds that use vibratory frequency to deepen concentration) and the breath. We will also explore the differences between concentration, visualization techniques, prayer and meditation. We will discuss raja yoga (royal path of meditation) and bhakti yoga (path of devotion and love) as well as koshas ( 5 levels of consciousness) and yantras (visual representations of consciousness). If one can not attend all three classes, there will be a short review before each new class so the student will be able to participate comfortably.

It turned out to be one of the best massages I’d ever had.  It’s more than a massage in my opinion because it involves a lot of stretching of large muscle groups.

I’m not a yoga practitioner and I don’t know anything about yoga except for the downward facing dog which I see my dog do about ten times a day so I may have my terminology off.  It was a combination of chanting and music that relaxes you, and a muscle massage and stretching of your body.  I’m in dire need this and I didn’t even know it existed.

It felt like some of the stretches were “challenging” but never into the pain zone.  Definitely what I needed.  Its not a soft touch massage which I don’t care for.  My muscles and connective tissues got moved around and at the end of it all I felt much better.  My body must have had a lot of tension. After the massage  and for over a week I felt more limber and much less tense. 

You’ve got to try this out for yourself.  One more thing,  Jody gives these massages in this little hide away in the city near Cedar Bend.  It a very old and charming building with a nice garden, patio and screened in porch that she and her husband Rupert DeSalis are fixing up.  She calls it Shaping Sound.  An I will bring this to you in a future post.
