Police Rescue Stranded Swimmer at Arb
Sunday April 26, 2009 afternoon. The Ann Arbor police rescued a stranded swimmer who was stuck on an island near the foot of the stone steps at Nichols Arboretum. During the first attempt the one rescuer nearly drowned due to the high current and impaired mobility with the dry suit.
On the second attempt the rescue crew went to the other side of the river and got across over the island then made his way to the second island and pulled the swimmer (a girl about 20-ish) to safety.
There were at least two ambulances, two ginormous fire trucks, several police cars and the Washtenaw County Sheriff on the scene.
Thanks for helping the girl. I know I’m not going swimming in this kind of current but if I fell in I’d be glad to know there are so many helpful people out there to help me.
More pictures to come as soon as I can get them off my cell phone.
